TravelBattle Battle by Perry Miniatures

With this blog having a focus on playing games in small spaces and my own like for using grids for wargames, it should be of no surprise, Dear Reader, that I pre-ordered this game when first  hearing about it. 



The fact that the game covered the cross-over of using figures and a boardgame style grid was of intrigue and I both wanted to support the project and of course have a look how the Perry's had tackled a grid based system.

This post is a detailed of 'out of the box' look at the components and system.

The Joy of ... Nostalgia, Basic Squad leader.

A look at scenario 1 - the one that started it all!

Of course at the time it was never thought of or marketed as 'Basic', but with the evolution of the system into Advanced Squad Leader (ASL), it now seems almost necessary to add the 'basic' monicker to the game title for distinction.



For those of us who have been around long enough to have played and played and played this game in our early years of wargaming, there is a shared understanding of just how important this title was in enthusing a generation of tactical gamers and designers.

Having recently managed to get a decent copy of this game in my hands again, I have been keen to get the game to the table and relive Scenario 1: The Guards Counterattack.

Updated ACW hex based rules

Two Flags - One Nation ACW rules

I have been going through a re-write of some old rules and bringing some new ideas to them, but even just a couple of months ago, they felt just a little awkward and not sufficiently intuitive. However over the last couple of weeks, I have hit one of those creative moments when things just seem to flow from the pen and fall together in a smoother way.


Part of this was generated by bringing in across more elements from my Napoleonic set (Eagles at Quatre Bras) into the design, resulting in a better game. Anyway, I put a game out yesterday that seemed to generate fewer hand written scrawls across my draft set and I had something of a breakthrough in how to handle Divisional Commanders, which I feel is fairly innovative.
