It was probably the most scale diverse show that I have been to for as long as I can recall. Sheffield (the now gone Triples) used to be very good in that regard until the domination of 28mm came along.

We threw in an overnight stay to make it work for us. Fundamentally, I’m sure people just want to play and time and space seem to be the two greatest barriers to that, so moving towards smaller and faster does seem an inevitable direction of travel. People are working in environments which have seen cut backs in staff, they doing longer hours, spending more time commuting and responding to work e-mails etc as a 24/7 thing rather than during the good old fashioned 8 hour day. Add to that the time robbing servicing that Social Media demands, then there are plenty of obstacles to getting a game to the table.

The success of the Wofun figures are perhaps just another indicator of gamers seeking solutions to the ‘time’ problem.

Interestingly on the boardgame side of things games are still being produced that have long playing times and are multi mapped - whether they are actually getting played or not is another matter. if there are changes, it is that boardgaming has seen the rise of the solitaire based games.

On the immediate horizon is a significant cost of living rise, as inflation in many economies becomes difficult to control - a new influencer, to govern the spending and collecting patterns of gamers. So I think the smaller game / collection is going to increasingly be the pathway that ensures the ultimate goal of getting games to the table.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-92172841003684605482022-03-06T21:42:00.188+00:002022-03-06T21:42:00.188+00:00Thanks Norm, fantastic report of what looks to be ...Thanks Norm, fantastic report of what looks to be a very good show. I couldn’t get there this year so am focusing on Partizan and my Culloden game. I think there is an overall shift to smaller games by a lot of gamers either because of space restrictions, the desire to play games in a couple of hours or less and also to cater for wider interests. Interestingly I just read one chaps thoughts on Historicon where as you no the majority of games are participation like Hammerhead, the big difference is that it’s a four day event. His view was that American gamers are also changing what they like. More gamers are no longer staying for the four days, the smaller participation games seem to becoming more popular than the larger games where they are tied down for half a day etc. The hobby is changing and dare I say I think for the better. I think my next small table dabble will be the Flags of War KS for the Border Reivers, ideal for narrative small table gamesGraham Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05229770388869939725noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-29954668860368958722022-03-06T19:54:59.583+00:002022-03-06T19:54:59.583+00:00Hi David, I would be happier if I could get my unp...Hi David, I would be happier if I could get my unpainted stuff down to your ‘pimple’ proportions, so a diversion from figure spend to terrain spend will be beneficial.
