Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the play of this game and look forward to an early return to it for us. I would wholeheartedly support all Norm's comments and recommendations of the game. I too love carrier games, especially when you have a physical representation of the deck to place and launch your planes from. There is an example of play in the rules in which they have the Japanese attack Midway right from the off ..... but the attack leaves them without enough Operations Points to do anything else on the morning turn and they suffer at the hands of the U.S. carriers - the example has a concluding note that the Japanese go for Midway rather than the carriers at their peril! Possessing an unsinkable ‘carrier’ in the form of Midway atoll is an advantage to the US but only if it is not bombed to smithereens by the Japanese. Did you try out bombing the Midway installations during your tests and game just to see how it works?Mike Vellahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01220933613292414697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-73618161248908718942020-02-23T17:40:31.837+00:002020-02-23T17:40:31.837+00:00Thanks Iain, carrier battles are just so different...Thanks Iain, carrier battles are just so different. I played two cards and didn’t feel that either was out of context with the historical aspects of that campaign. I don’t want to sound like I am defending cards, because I mostly don’t like them in games, but based on my limited exposure to the design, they seem to have a comfortable relationship with the game.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-87986534685819098012020-02-23T17:24:22.824+00:002020-02-23T17:24:22.824+00:00Interesting sounding game, it seems valid to have ...Interesting sounding game, it seems valid to have the cards in order to reinforce historical events, as long as it doesn't unbalance the game which doesn't seem to have happened, carrier battles are fascinating I think.
Best Iain caveadsum1471https://www.blogger.com/profile/02174163740406928172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-34835727889808433722020-02-23T06:44:56.640+00:002020-02-23T06:44:56.640+00:00Thanks Ellis, another good one from the Revolution...Thanks Ellis, another good one from the Revolution Games stable and I think Roger was right to move the game in the direction that he did to get that 'thing' about carrier battles into play that we probably expect.

The flip side of course is that we expect 'proper' seek and locate searches and yet the original idea of search capacity instead producing Operations points is very clever and a novel way of thinking about the subjectNormhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-445279555240183202020-02-23T06:43:29.766+00:002020-02-23T06:43:29.766+00:00Thanks Jonathan, I am not a fan of cards in games,...Thanks Jonathan, I am not a fan of cards in games, mostly because of the the 'take-that' element and the unscripted nature of the play, however, here, I find that influence rather dampened down.

The number of cards in the game is just 13. At the start of play, the Japanese are randomly dealt 3 of 'their' cards and the U.S. player 2. The remaining 7 cards are shuffled into a draw pile. Starting with turn 2, only one player (alternating each turn) will draw a card. There is every chance you will draw an enemy card, which while useless to you, prevents the enemy getting it.

The cards seem to be reinforcing historical events and so when Yorktown was thought sunk by the Japanese, but was in fact being towed to port, I felt that to be a tasty reflection of the historical narrative. I wonder how else one would get that sort of thing into the game. Rather in the same way that a Bismarck game probably needs to show the 'potential' for a ship such as Hood to take a 'critical hit'.

They probably have the balance right if I am okay with it, as I am generally disposed to strongly disliking cards and 'take-that' moments.

In our game, the survival of the Enterprise was probably as shocking and frustrating :-)

I think 1980, the birth of the home computer, the transferring of our games to the screen, was a magical time, that was as much about the awe of this technology coming into our lives as it was about the game. I rather fancy we are best left with our memories of wonder intact, than expose ourselves to the reality of the 'then' limitations.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-16436516745093181712020-02-23T04:31:33.399+00:002020-02-23T04:31:33.399+00:00Nice review. From your playthrough, it seemed the Event cards played an important role in the eventual outcome. Playing the “CV towed away” and Soryu critical hit cards gave the Japanese player a double “Take That!” Demoralizing. Not sure I would enjoy that ending.

TAHGC produced a number of computer games in 1980 that I played the heck out of on my TRS80 and Commodore 64. That was one of my first brushes with computer AI and I loved it. I still have memories of announcements that “aircraft caught refueling on deck” in many of my attacks on the Japanese carriers. Great fun! I wonder if I would still enjoy those old computer games?Jonathan Freitaghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07862373894196924886noreply@blogger.com
