As a tactical fan, I'm sure you will get a lot out of the starter set. The X-Maps certainly are nice, hard to move away from them once you have had a taster :-)

I have the solo set, but as someone who is quite happy to play solo anyway and to play what I believe is both sides to their best, I remain bit on the side-line as to how useful it is for me. Anyway, it goes on my table now, going through the paces, so I will just see how it goes.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-6244386855078223502017-11-27T00:32:28.817+00:002017-11-27T00:32:28.817+00:00Hi Norm,

Over the past year I acquired several of their X-Map and Battle Generator sets which I think they can be used for any tactical game such as Squad Leader or ASL Starter Kits etc. I also picked up their LnLT Solo as well.

I do have Heroes of the Pacific but have yet to play it however I chose it rather than Combat Commander Pacific because "Heroes" has tanks and aircraft included.

Thanks for your blogqing effort which I continue to faithfully read. Keep up the great work.

Cheers,
DaveAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09552458481276959782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-1678104682848898312017-11-22T10:24:09.968+00:002017-11-22T10:24:09.968+00:00Keith, you will not be disappointed, it looks like...Keith, you will not be disappointed, it looks like just the job to entertain you. Like you, I really enjoyed the original SL series and played it and its offspring for many years. As I may have noted before, when TAHGC made the move to ASL, they left me behind.

I plan to give the ASL Starter Kit a try and see if I recognize the game from my SL days. Your review and analysis of LnL makes it sound as a worthy replacement.

Thanks again. The basics, importantly that lovely Combat Result Table are still in play. Beyond the Beaches adds a gameboard with hedges (a terrain not previously covered by the starter sets), but from memory, two out of the three scenarios have hidden set-up or some requirement that is not solitaire friendly.

My own take as a big fan of BASIC Squad leader is that starter kit 1 is fun, but as one progresses through the remaining starter kits, the rule density does increase and the fun gives way a little, which it has to be said is natural as the starter kits are designed to be a journey to the full system. I think once you get into the higher levels of the game you need to be playing it a lot to 'keep your hand in' so-to-speak.

Lock 'n Load looks like it was inspired by ASL, but it is a more streamlined system. For example, the off-board artillery rules are contained in just a couple of pages of large font text, where-as the ASL off-Board stuff (introduced starter kit wise in the Decision at Elst module) just feels more convoluted, to this gamer at least.

My dream game would be a reprint of Basic Squad leader, with the armour tidied up and another nationality added and great graphics, but that is never going to happen.

I think for where you are up to, it would be worth your while getting a copy of the Lock ' Load starter kit an then comparing the infantry only action of the two systems.

At the basic infantry level, the games are close, but L'nL doesn't have final fire type subsystem found in ASL and I prefer the ASL Combat Result Table and methodology, but when bringing in a fuller order-of-battle with tanks, support weapons and artillery, I prefer the streamlining (and frankly the good looks)of Lock 'n Load.
Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-344708093658761792017-11-18T21:16:47.874+00:002017-11-18T21:16:47.874+00:00Yes - it's interesting even that the MOgidishu...Yes - it's interesting even that the MOgidishu variant is now available too. How does it compare to ASL?

Based upon one of your other WWII tactical survey posts and my old fondness for Squad Leader, I plopped down the cash for ASL Starter Kit#1 and Beyond the Beaches. I am very much looking forward to introducing myself ASL in a small way. Did I make a wise choice in going the ASL route or should LnL be a more reasoned choice?
