Not that I couldn't wrap my head around the rules, I am at the age where I just don't want to put forth the effort. :D Thanks for posting the review!Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17580996687227953658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-1878575077802365432015-12-01T22:55:53.521+00:002015-12-01T22:55:53.521+00:00Great review, thanks for posting!Great review, thanks for posting!Nathanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17512161899548908858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-62964786576264252112015-11-27T18:25:20.698+00:002015-11-27T18:25:20.698+00:00I'm sticking with Retro, myself. I've played my favorite Retro just twice in the past year, though I will set it up tonight to take advantage of the long American holiday.

Yeah, nothing else has really grabbed me at that scale. I guess my preference for Retro means I just want a more streamlined ASLSK. Maybe SL using the ASLSK units, with defensive fire options from the old rulebook, is what I really want? And maybe Walker's upcoming Old School Tactical will be "the one" that will successfully scratch that gaming itch.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01026596732080623415noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-23929214045100595532015-11-27T08:24:10.701+00:002015-11-27T08:24:10.701+00:00Hi Richard, that is a tough one. I have yet to find the one system that I want to fully immerse myself in at the cost of abandoning all others and so I tend to flit from one system to another, staying with each one for a while, while I re-connect with all the rules so that I am playing it properly (and then remember the irritations as to why I abandoned it on earlier occasions).

Obviously, at the moment I have Lock ’n Load on the table, which I am enjoying, though I find the fire system slightly less intuitive than I would like (where the attacker fires and then the defender rolls for defence and one gets subtracted from the other and if that results in a positive number for the firer, then test morale rolls are made against each defender).

The last system I had on the table was Conflict of Heroes, which is a very nice looking game, but I felt the key involvement and management of the Activation Point Tracks interfered with the flow of play.

Queued on the shelf for playing next, I have La Bataille de France (Compass Games) and would like to see what that is all about, though it is at a higher level (platoon) rather than my preferred squad based action and I can't see it replacing my 40 - 50 metres to hex type games.

I think if I only wanted to play purely infantry actions I would go with my oldest friend …. ASL (and even then, only at the ASLSK level), but because I do like my armour - everything is always in the mix as to what I might choose next.

I have my own rules for figures on hexes with 3D terrain, which I find playable and fun and I suppose I should really work on that and make it a better game and put it into a boardgame format.

I suppose like many old hands, I am looking for the game that will give me the same hit that the original (basic) Squad Leader did all those years ago in 1978) and that is a tough itch to scratch.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-80250892200416012242015-11-27T01:21:41.181+00:002015-11-27T01:21:41.181+00:00Second attempt, not sure if the first comment is j...Second attempt, not sure if the first comment is just slowly uploading.
