Must have taken quite some courage to storm across that long exposed bridge and up the steep hill under very heavy Confederate fire. Troops look excellent. I'd say that worked very well as a stand alone scenario with great period flavour provided by your narration.'Lee.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02728400013024811279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-76649372139299948452020-10-10T17:39:17.013+00:002020-10-10T17:39:17.013+00:00Thanks Iain, I quite like that the Union felt that...Thanks Iain, I quite like that the Union felt that they were blown and that the retreat itself was played out, it made it feel like just one episode in what might have been a series of attacks to take the heights over the next few hours. The Confederates would also have to lick their wounds, so I thought it a fair outcome and telling of the encounter.

As you say, it is what Black Powder does and providing the gamers imagination can weave a story out of that, it is a great strength of the game.Normhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031444717952755557noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5368677310334370714.post-51850367189478156192020-10-10T16:26:57.395+00:002020-10-10T16:26:57.395+00:00Nice trio of posts! The Union retreat makes sense to me as they seemed exposed, I thought they were going to steamroller the smaller rebel units especially with the loss of their commander but that is one of the strengths of the black powder system, you can't be certain of anything! I think I was also plagued by the belief that this should not have been an easy Union game and that may well have influenced decisions :-)

The mat is rather nice, it a Gale Force Nine mat from Battlefront intended for their Flames of War stuff. I quite liked in the game that the Union just felt that there was a sensible time to retreat and that the retreat itself was played out, bringing in the 28th Massachusetts from behind the wall, who otherwise would have played no part in the game. Without Toombs to rally off dameage, it is perhaps arguable that the Union should have pressed on. The lacklustre movement of Nagle's troops reflected rather nicely the historical Union performance at times around the bridge; as you say, the C&C system of BP reflects this sort of event rather nicely.

Losing Toombs was certainly a blow for the Confederate troops and I thought that this might be the turning point of the battle, but 'twas not to be.

I hope you find the time and inclination to more of this sort of thing Norm as I find it a nice exercise in how to go about generating unusaul scenarios.Steve J.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12143308117853983963noreply@blogger.com
