Battle for Moscow - Operation Typhoon 1941

In 1986, wargaming luminary Frank Chadwick of Games Designers’ Workshop (GDW), put together a game with just 4 pages of rules that were to (a) cover the basic principles of wargaming and (b) be given away for free, to serve as an introduction for new players to the hobby. Of course this fine  game turned out to be very enjoyable for veteran gamers as well …. so here we are!

The subject (Operation Typhoon) covers the 1941 German drive towards Moscow by Army Group Centre.

For a light touch look at a play-through of the 3Ci version (RBM Studio) of the game, please use the ‘read more’ tab.

Battle for Kursk

Battle for Kursk - The Tigers are Burning 1943, is designed by Trevor Bender and it is the supplement game appearing in the most recent edition (Nr.34) C3i Magazine, published by RBM Studio.

The game is a well presented look at the Russian front during the period of March to November 1943, built around a low complexity game engine, but with a couple of fresh mechanisms that will keep both players engaged and giving a game that will comfortably fit into a single session.

The rest of this post gives way to a brief overview of the mechanics and loosely follows my initial outing with the game.

Waterloo Campaign 1815

Hot on the heels of the Gettysburg design by Mark Herman in a previous C3i magazine, comes Mark’s similar treatment of Waterloo in the latest issue of C3i (issue 33).

I really like this system and a full look at the mechanics to appreciate the subtle nature of what appears a simple game, that punches above its weight, can be found in my Gettysburg post (link below in the Resource Section).

For Waterloo we are treated to a full size map and just 43 game counters, looking at the final 3 - 4 days of what is commonly referred to as the 100 days campaign. Will the final showdown be fought at Waterloo?

Gettysburg - The full 3 days battle with less than 28 counters!

Gettysburg, by Mark Herman was recently published as a stand alone game in the C3i magazine from RBM Studio. It was one of a non-connected pairing with the Issy 1815 game, a napoleonic battle from the Jours de Gloire series.

Anyway RBM Studio have also made a separate publishing of Gettysburg as a boxed game, giving it a ‘Deluxe’ status. This essentially adds a box, a GMT counter tray, a mounted board in addition to the paper map and a strategy guide.

Significantly, this is also marked as being game one of a new series, so one can only hope other games from the C3i stable will see their way into this format.

The rest of this post looks at this interesting game, that benefits from a small footprint, short playing time, low complexity and true top down look at the battle.
