Fighting at Plancenoit - 1815

Time to put this small footprint game on the table again. ‘Crisis on the Right - Plancenoit 1815’ is published by White Dog Games.

It is 18th June 1815, Wellington is fighting a desperate battle close by on the field of Waterloo. The Prussians are making best speed to join him and have started to arrive on Napoleon’s right flank.

Napoleon needs to hold the Prussians back as long as possible while he deals a knock-out blow to the Anglo-Allies. The game map gives focus to the town of Plancenoit. The Prussians are arriving there in increasing numbers, causing Napoleon to divert much needed troops to shield his right.

This post gives a brief overview of the game. There is a moment in play that potentially looks interesting enough to create a scenario for the figures table and that is discussed. For those wanting an in depth look at the system, the Resource section at the foot of this post has a link to a previous highlighting of system and play.

Plancenoit 1815

Crisis on the Right: Plancenoit 1815, described as an introductory boardgame from White Dog Games is designed by Michael W. Kennedy and was published in 2015 for the 200th anniversary of the battle. The game is still in print.

All of the Waterloo games that I can recall, concentrate on the day long Anglo-Allied struggle against Napoleon’s French, with the arrival of the Prussians being a secondary feature. This design shifts the entire focus of the game onto the Prussian arrival (Bülow’s IV Corps) on Napoleon’s right and to the fight for Plancenoit and surrounding hamlets.

The rest of this post looks at this system and gives a couple of exploded examples of play to highlight game mechanics. It then rounds off with a brief AAR and conclusions.

The battle of Antietam 17th September 1862

Antietam is the latest offering from White Dog Games and is designed by Michael W Kennedy. It is immediately interesting for describing itself as an introductory wargame, presenting the system with just a four page rulebook.

Having been pleased with their introductory Borodino game last year, which got a lot of game out of a short rule set, I was keen to get this to the table.

The rest of this post looks at the system, giving way to some After Action Report highlights and using turn 1 to example the mechanics and turn sequence.

Borodino 1812 The Most Terrible Battle

The Most Terrible Battle is designed by Mike Kennedy and published by White Dog Games. It covers the subject of Napoleon’s attack at Borodino, with individual game counters representing divisions, grouped into corps.

The rest of this post gives way to some general observations and some of the game mechanics highlighted by an AAR.
