28mm Austrian Jäger

I started this little group of 9 figures on 5th April, which turns out lucky, as the three table battle that I am working through at the moment, has Austrian Jägers appearing on one of the flank battles. So I have put a bit of a wiggle on to get these over the finishing line and ready for action.

My normal napoleonic 80mm bases have two ranks of 5 figures giving 10 fairly closely packed men, so just putting three to a base here, compared to the rest of the force really opens up the base to give a good open order look.

They can do double service when not acting as companies of jäger, deployed as line skirmishers thrown out by the battalions.

They are all plastics, mainly Victrix (I think).

One final job is to give a light spraying of matt varnish, but I will wait for the weather to warm up a little more before trusting the rattle can.

I am trying to keep the French and Austrian armies fairly evenly matched in unit types as they added to, so the vacant positions on the painting corks will now be taken by 9 French Voltigeurs.

These are metals (Eagle Figures) that were rattle can primed white last year as part of the autumn prepping for the winter painting.

    1. Thanks, I must admit to it being a bit accidental. Vellejo Dark Grey went down first and then a black wash no doubt darkened that. For highlights I used the highly pigmented Ash Grey from Army painter, with a tad of ivory - but it does look like the coloured plates that I have been looking at.

    1. Hi Ray, there were a few different facings that I could have gone for, but the red pops rather nicely.

    1. Thanks Alan, everything else I have is in marching pose, I can’t even remember these poses being available on the sprue, the sensible part of me should have made up more than 9 nine models at the time :-)

  12. Great work Norm, very nicely done, the Victrix Austrian range is a nice one, they have a real good look to them.

  13. Thanks Donnie, for plastics they are quite an old figure. One of the problems that I have had with them is that I use the crested helmet / head (1809 and earlier) rather than the later shako. There seems to be a modelling issue, assuming that I am getting the back pack placed correctly, but the back of the helmet and top of the back pack make contact and it forces the soldiers heads to look down.

I am left assuming it is my error because I have never heard of anyone else raising the issue …. Despite looking!

You do get plenty of figures per box, plus 2 mounted colonels which is handy.

  14. Thay look great Norm and I do the same sort of thing with light troops/skirmishers - same sized base but half the figures - makes them easy to identify on the table, too!

    1. Thanks Keith, while they are still a little close for skirmishers when seen alone, I agree, it is when they are next to standard close order bases and the rest of the army that they ‘look right’

  15. Fine work on thse Norm and thinking of your last post, I can see why you are more drawn towards 28mm, rather than 10mm et al. Looking forward to seeing these chaps in action:).

  16. Thanks Steve, yes, scales have always been a point of contention with me. My 28’s are formed from 2 x 80mm bases, so a frontage of 160mm, which actually isn’t that big. When I was doing Epic, I had 3 x 60mm bases, so at 180mm, they were actually taking up more width than my 28’s and though they did have an advantage in shallow depth, depth has never really been an issue in the kind of games that I run.

You will not have long to wait, they are now patiently awaiting their moment! in my 3 table corps game.
