Sir Bartholomew Rolfe - Chronicles of Piggy Longton

This post introduces a new character for my Piggy Longton ImagiNations.

Sir. Bartholomew Rolfe, a Yorkist through and through, was widely known and well respected by the men of West Rottington, as his background and transformation to knight was most unusual in character, it being rare for someone to have moved across the social divide to gain such status. His surname gives indication of his humble peasant beginnings.

The son of a local farmhand working on the estate, as then belonging to Lord Trebian’s father, Conrad. He was in the right place at the right time to save Conrad’s life by bravely fending off a murderous enemy ambush.

He fought with such ferocity that the elderly Conrad, impressed and grateful, took him under his wing and fully funded his education and subsequent pathway to Squire, during which time he served within the household cavalry as Squire to Sir. John Radcliffe, fighting in the service of Conrad.

Upon Conrad’s death, his son, the present Lord Trebian, continued to financially sponsor Rolfe, who through good deed and combat worthiness, at the age of 22 and with the indulgence of the Crown, had recently been knighted.

His heraldic device is plain, with a black and white field and the scythe emblazoned upon it, representing his immediate heritage of commoner. This was viewed with some humour by some of his more class conscious contemporaries, though few would want or dare to insult him to his face.

Sir. Bartholomew with his favoured weapon, the flanged mace, moves to the attack with his colours carried by his aspiring Squire, Thomas Payne

However, to the ordinary men who followed him, especially those who remembered him as a boy, he was revered. They would follow him, above all others, to the ends of the earth! That alone put him into a different league to his fellow warriors, even leaving some worried of the consequences should he ever lose their favour and lead a rebellion or tread an otherwise treacherous path (F’r we liveth in the most treach’rous of times).

Rolfe was in his prime, fiercely loyal to the Trebian household and as a warrior without equal, was becoming increasingly relied upon by Lord Trebian …… who has, by the way, just sent for Rolfe to discuss a ‘local situation’!

Lord Trebian has his campaign map spread across the table
and is surveying his neighbour’s estate!

  1. Great background fluff there Norm with a nice and simple flag to suit his humble beginnings. I look forward to following his adventures during the WotR in and around Piggy Longton.

  2. Thanks Steve, as a bit of effort went into creating the bespoke character, I’m now thinking …… but what if I lose him in the first game!

    1. He won't have died. He will only be wounded, captured, taking a long pilgrimage to some place nice, sandy, and sunny for the winter. But he will return in the next episode of "The Piggy Longton Wars".

    2. Yes, I’m hoping that he will be as ‘tough as old boots’ - otherwise I will have to reflag him!

    3. Boots on a pole or flag works as well. 🤔

  3. Love the flag Norm. I’m sure we’ll see it carried into battle pretty soon!

    2. By the way, I have Billhooks Deluxe on the way to me and it looks like it has been stretched to include the Italian Wars.

    3. If you don't already have an Italian wars force set up. Maybe you can build one for the small Tuscan town of Culone Porcellino?

    4. Oh nice some Anglo Norman Acton?

    6. Nice! Looking forward to seeing Piggy Longton throughout the ages. Could even use it for some Barons Wars, English Civil war, heck bring it up to the modern era with A very British civil war or some operation red lion action as well. Could have the same families still fighting it out over the same town to today.

    7. I would like to do some 1066, ECW and Operation Sealion type periods and had thought that the Wars of the Roses story might end towards the end of 1471 … yet here we are, about to get into 1472! :-)

There was a 12mm 1066 game done 3 years ago at Little Bump Hill - called Not Hastings, it was set in the borough of Dungborough and was the fore-runner to Piggy Longton. LINK

    1. Hi, thanks. The Yorkists needed their own version of Stephen the Fearless.

  8. Great stuff again Norm, sounds like the plot for a Medieval work of fiction or Hollywood movie....of course, you are going to have include a love interest...like a tryst with the daughter of the leading Lancastrian....all very Romeo and Juliet!

  9. Hi Keith, I never would have thought when this started out as a single game with some some silly names in it, that it would evolve and develop its own identity in the way that it has, great fun and who knows what twists lay ahead ….. not me! :-)

  10. This little piece of invention now has a life of its own. A new character and a hint of something wicked coming this way. Long may these stories continue, will the family enmity continue through the ages?

  11. Hi Graham, it all started with a ‘not Hastings’ game with some silly names around three years ago ……. and has now become a real place :-)

  14. How did I miss the introduction of a new character to Piggy Longton? I absolutely love what you do here Norm, you take wargaming to a whole new level with the interweaving of fictitious places and characters that you bring to life with your narration and back stories. All the best,
    Lee.
